Richard Mansfield

Statement

My work is a commentary upon American society. It is the outcome of creating, collecting, and reconfiguring the symbols and objects of this culture. The sculptures address the relationships -- and often conflicts -- in society; between consumer, religious and historical dogmas and the unique interpretations each individual brings to an experience.
My goal is to create pieces that produce laughter, introspection and, sometimes, indignation. I want to pull viewers into my world and let them see these objects together in a challenging narrative, The process of making artwork is a constant struggle, because I want it to say something that is, to me profound. In this effort to create a compelling piece, new directions surprise me and that is where the satisfaction and pleasure of making sculpture becomes real.
